Members of our board of directors have been personally involved with the development of molecular diagnostic products and ventures. They have driven the development of landmark technologies in widespread use today, including personalized genetic diagnostics and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Their leadership will help us achieve our vision of clarity in diagnostics.

Bonnie Anderson

Cofounder and Chief Executive Officer
Bonnie Anderson is the cofounder of Veracyte and has served as Chief Executive Officer since 2008. Prior to founding Veracyte, Ms. Anderson provided strategic consulting to venture capital firms and early stage diagnostic and life science companies providing business and market development services and operational and commercialization planning. Additionally, she held key leadership positions during her 18-year tenure in the global businesses of Beckman Coulter. As Vice President-Director, she formed and led the company’s intrapreneurial Immunomics Operations, advancing a novel immune monitoring technology used in clinical research, diagnostics, and drug discovery and drug development to elucidate the mechanism of immune response. With 25 years of experience in the health care industry, Ms. Anderson serves on the Board of Trustees of the Keck Graduate Institute of Life Sciences and the advisory board for Bay Bio. She has also served on the boards of Thymed, GmbH and Women in Biotechnology.

Brian Atwood, MS, MBA

Chairman of the Board
Brian Atwood specializes in biotechnology investing at Versant. Mr. Atwood cofounded Versant Ventures after spending four years at Brentwood Venture Capital, where as a general partner he led investments in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and bioinformatics. Prior to launching his career in venture capital, Mr. Atwood was founder, President, and CEO of Glycomed, where he concentrated on business development and strategic alliances, forming relationships with Eli Lilly & Company, Millipore, Genentech, and Sankyo before leading the sale of Glycomed to Ligand Pharmaceuticals. Prior to this, he cofounded and served as Director of Perkin Elmer/Cetus Instruments, a joint venture for robotics automation and genomics research instruments and products later acquired by Perkin Elmer. Under Mr. Atwood’s management, the venture developed and launched the GeneAmp® Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) system, the fundamental DNA amplification innovation responsible for fueling the explosive growth of genomics research. Mr. Atwood received a B.S. in biological sciences from the University of California, Irvine, an M.S. from the University of California, Davis, and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Brook Byers, MBA

As a venture capital investor since 1972, Brook Byers has been closely involved with more than fifty new technology-based ventures, greater than half of which have already become public companies. He formed the first life sciences practice group in the venture capital profession in 1984 and led KPCB to become a premier venture capital firm in the medical, health care and biotechnology sectors. Mr. Byers was president and a director of the Western Association of Venture Capitalists. He is currently a board member of the University of California at San Francisco Medical Foundation, the New Schools Foundation, Stanford’s Bio-X Advisory Council and the Stanford Eye Council. Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Mr. Byers graduated in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech and received an M.B.A. from Stanford.

Evan Jones, MBA

Evan Jones is the interim CEO of OpGen, a genetic analysis services and systems company. He is also a managing member of the life investment company jVen Capital, and he was the cofounder, Chairman and CEO of Digene, a molecular diagnostic testing and women’s health company. Mr. Jones has more than 25 years of experience in the life science industry, where he has initiated numerous ventures. He currently serves on the boards of Signature Genomic Laboratories (Chairman), CAS Medical Systems and Veracyte. Mr. Jones also chairs the Campaign for Public Health and Research! America. Previously, he was Chairman of the Children’s Research Institute and a member of the Children’s National Medical Center. Mr. Jones received his B.A. from the University of Colorado and earned his M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Fred Cohen, MD, PhD

Fred Cohen is the Managing Director at TPG and Professor of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology at the University of California, San Francisco. Currently, Dr. Cohen serves on the boards of Genomic Health, xDx, FivePrime Therapeutics, Matrix Pharmaceuticals and Veracyte. He is also an investment committee member of the board of Quintiles Transnational. Dr. Cohen’s academic career includes a B.S. from Yale University, an M.D. from Stanford and a Ph.D. from Oxford University. He is renowned for his work on protein structure and the conformational basis of prion disease.

Samuel D. Colella, MBA

A highly respected venture capitalist recognized for his leadership in life sciences investing, Sam Colella cofounded Versant Ventures with six other managing directors in 1999. During the course of his career, Mr. Colella has acquired more than 20 years of successful operating experience in the high-technology industry and more than 25 years of investing experience in the health care sector. Prior to founding Versant, Mr. Colella managed one of the first life science-focused investing groups in the industry as a general partner with Institutional Venture Partners (IVP). Previously, he was president of a New York Stock Exchange company and held a variety of functional positions in a broad array of diverse businesses, including President of Spectra-Physics, the world's leading laser supplier, and Senior Manager of the Technical Products Division at Corning Glass. Mr. Colella has a B.S. degree in business and engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.B.A. degree from Stanford University.

Jonathan T. Lord, MD

Jack Lord, a board-certified forensic pathologist, most recently served as President and CEO of Navigenics. Previously, he was Chief Innovation Officer at Humana, Inc., where he led the development of new products and services to transform fundamentally the health care system and support personal health needs. Dr. Lord was also Chief Executive of Humana Europe. Additionally, Dr. Lord was previously President of Health Dialog in Boston, where he helped pioneer Internet-enabled health care and promoted shared decision-making between doctors and patients. He has served in the capacities of Chief Operating Officer of the American Hospital Association in Washington, District of Columbia, Executive Vice President of Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland, and Executive Vice President of Sun Health in Charlotte, North Carolina. He received his medical degree from the University of Miami in 1978. Dr. Lord has held numerous academic appointments, notably Adjunct Professor of Community Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School.

Jesse I. Treu, PhD

Jesse Treu has been a Partner of Domain since its inception in 1985. He has been a director of more than 30 early-stage health care companies, 18 of which have become successful public companies. At present, his board memberships include Afferent Pharmaceuticals, CoLucid, Regado Biosciences, Tandem Diabetes Care and Veracyte. He has served as a Founder, President and Chairman of numerous venture stage companies. Prior to the formation of Domain, Mr. Treu was vice president of the predecessor organization to The Wilkerson Group and its venture capital arm, CW Ventures. While at CW Ventures, he served as President and CEO of Microsonics, a pioneer in computer image processing for cardiology. Prior to that, Mr. Treu held executive positions at Technicon Instruments Corporation (now Siemens Medical Solutions Diagnostics) and GE. Mr. Treu earned his B.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and holds both an M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University.
