Why would my doctor order the Prosigna test?

Your breast cancer treatment decisions will depend on several important factors. Your doctor may recommend the Prosigna Breast test because it provides valuable insights about your breast cancer. It can help determine if you may safely avoid chemotherapy.

The Prosigna test helps to understand:

  • The unique biology of your tumor, including intrinsic subtype: Luminal A, Luminal B, Basal-like or HER2 enriched
  • The chance that your breast cancer could return over the next 10 years
  • Whether chemotherapy is likely to benefit you or if you may safely avoid it

This information can help you and your doctor choose a treatment plan that is right for you.

The Prosigna test uniquely combines intrinsic subtypes and proliferation score with clinical pathological factors into a single Risk of Recurrence (ROR) score and a 10-year probability of distant recurrence.

How does the test work?

Prosigna is a genomic test that looks at your tumor biology to provide important information about your breast cancer. This helps you and your doctor choose the best treatment plan.

female patient

The Prosigna Breast test is for people with hormone-receptor positive (HR+) breast cancer, prior to any non-surgical treatments. This includes cancers that test positive for estrogen (ER+) and/or progesterone (PR+).

Your Prosigna test report will provide the following information:

  • Intrinsic subtype: based on your tumor biology. Your breast cancer is classified as: Luminal A, Luminal B, Basal-like or HER2 enriched.
  • Prosigna Risk of Recurrence (ROR) score: ranges from 0-100. It is used to determine the 10-year probability of distant recurrence and if you may benefit from chemotherapy.
  • 10-year probability of distant recurrence: estimates the likelihood that your cancer will return if you receive endocrine (hormone) therapy alone.
  • Chemotherapy predicted benefit: ROR scores ≤ 60 indicate you may safely avoid it.

The Prosigna test uses tissue collected during your breast biopsy or surgery. No extra medical procedure is required.

Your doctor will receive the Prosigna test results in a report. It explains your risk of cancer coming back and whether you may safely avoid chemotherapy.

Your doctor will review the report with you and discuss how it may guide your treatment.
