Thomas A. Buchholz, M.D.

Thomas A. Buchholz, M.D., joined the Veracyte Scientific and Technology Advisory Board in July 2026. He serves as Senior Vice President and Medical Director of the Scripps Cancer Center in San Diego and as Chief Scientific Officer for Scripps Health. In addition, Dr. Buchholz maintains a part-time clinical practice as a Scripps radiation oncologist. 

He is also Professor Emeritus at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where he spent 20 years as an academic physician, researcher, educator, and executive leader. His leadership roles at MD Anderson included Division Head and Department Chair of Radiation Oncology, Provost, and Physician-in-Chief.  

Dr. Buchholz has published more than 380 peer-reviewed journal articles and numerous editorials, invited articles and book chapters. He previously served as Editor-in-Chief of a cancer journal and was twice elected to serve as Co-Chair of the Breast Cancer Steering Committee for the National Cancer Institute’s Clinical Trials Network. 

He holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Bucknell University and an M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine, and completed his radiation oncology residency at University of Washington-School of Medicine.
